Not A Win, Yet A Win
“Well then you better stop telling me because I’m not listening anymore”, Andrew managed to get this out before he stormed off with a stalk of some plant in his mouth. It was 22nd May of this year, St Josephs Institutions was holding it’s annual Inter-Class Touch Rugby and Soccer tournament for secondary one students. There had been a lot of fussing over who would play soccer and who would play rugby. I was with the group playing rugby. Before any of this had started, one of my teachers had already told my class we would see two types of teams out there on the field, those who worked together and those who did not work together at all. My expectations were not high, since none of us had the slightest clue how to play rugby, but I had never expected anyone to lose their temper because we lost a game.
So far we had tied our first game and lost our second game. Obviously we were not one of the teams which worked well together. And if you’re wondering, Andrew is a small sized boy with a big sized temper. After losing our second match, all of us were taking a break to get a drink and try to rest up for the third match. After this break is where Andrew lost his temper. All of us were concentrating on practicing to catch and pass the rugby ball better, what we thought was the problem with our game. I went to find Andrew so all of us could practice together. And this is where it all begins……
I called out to Andrew, “Andrew, let’s go practice for the next match.” “It’s no use! That’s not the problem!” Andrew replied. With that I softened my tone, “Okay… But Andrew, we’re all doing this for fun, not to win.” It did not affect him, “Do you know what our problem is? We’re all bunching at one side, that’s why the other team keeps getting touchdowns so easily! Because we have a huge gap at the other side of the field! ” I had forgotten why I had gone to him in the first place. “Well Andrew, I’m just going to keep telling you the same thing, we’re all doing this for fun, not to win.” Finally, Andrew got fed up, “Well then you better stop telling me because I’m not listening anymore.” And that’s show it happened, how this line came out. Andrew and I did not take this conversation to heart, it was forgotten almost as soon as he walked away.
By the time Andrew had walked off, the next game was about to start. Our next match was against class 101. This match was long, very long, probably the longest match that day. The ball was going back and forth. Once one team had made progress, the ball went to the other team. This cycle repeated itself over and over again, with people coming in and going out in between. I’m not sure if the other side had a plan but my class’ plan consisted of one word, cheong (meaning to rush), basically if someone got the hold of the ball, they would just run forward regardless of how many people are blocking. Someone I saw try very hard was Andrew, when he ran forward, he got knocked down close to every time. Everyone wanted us to wrap up the game, the referee, the announcer, 101, the other classes and last but not least ourselves. We were tired and the score was still nil all.
As the game stretched on, I started to stop paying attention to the things around me, all my attention was focused on the other team, where they positioned themselves, where the gaps were, where there was an opening, where there was an opportunity. Now and then I heard something but only little parts. When 101 got the ball and was running to our side to score, I could hear the announcer cheering 101 on.
Finally, the ball is on our side but the other team had the advantage, they were closer to our end of the field. We were about three quarters of the field away from getting a touchdown. There were four people on our side and four or five on their side. So we started to play, Leonard tapped the ball to start the game and passed it to Andrew, who passed it to Sulaiman who then passed it to me. And I ran, there was no one in my way, the other team was concentrating on the other side, where the ball had started. As I ran, I instinctively tucked the ball under my arm, I was no longer thinking clearly, I only had my eyes set on the goal. As I approached the end of the field, with the other team on my heels, I felt a tap. All hopes destroyed by one little tap. After the tap I tried to stop, I slid towards the piece of string strung through pieces of wood stuck into the ground, unable to stop, sliding on the drain and…… using the ball in my hands to break my fall.
After that they said we had won, our team had won with a love all. 101 shouted at the announcer saying that they tapped me first, I shouted at the announcer saying they tapped me first, we still won. I do not remember much after getting the ball, my friends say I covered three quarters of the field, and since I have no idea the distance I covered I have to take their word for it.
After this, our class was overjoyed, but the one I went to first was Andrew. His mood had increased a lot since before the game. He was close to jumping for joy. Everyone’s mood was so much better, we won our next match two-nil. We came 9th out of twelve classes, but we were much more than content.
Do You Think This Happened? Y
